Girona & the Costa Brava

Mixed-Surface Bike Tour

$1175 per person

May 10-14, 2026

4 Days / 5 Nights

In the northeast corner of Spain between Barcelona and the French border, the foothills of the Pyrenees collide with the Mediterranean Sea, creating a stunning coastline of cliffs and postcard-perfect coves and beaches known as the Costa Brava ("wild coast"). In addition to this idyllic setting, the region is rich in history, with ancient castles and classic Spanish towns connected by a network of backroads perfect for exploration on two wheels!

This tour has been carefully designed to provide you with a thorough survey of the very best of the Costa Brava, covering the coast, the rustic countryside, and the storied mountain climbs, while including countless points of interest along the way. Starting and finishing in Girona (a short train ride from Barcelona's international airport), with three nights at beachfront lodging in between, this trip serves up Spain's finest surf & turf!

OVERVIEW: Capturing the Costa Brava in Four Rides

With so many amazing roads to choose from in this region, putting together a four-day tour that captures the essence of the Costa Brava is no simple task. While it would be easy to focus on the endless countryside backroads and mountain climbs, I didn't want to do so at the expense of what makes the Costa Brava so special - the actual coastline. So in addition to booking three nights of the tour at first-class beachfront hotels (nothing like relaxing on the Mediterranean after a beautiful bike ride), I also included a stellar road ride along the coast, as well as a dozen miles of beach town cruising, which will give you a real sense of how popular this area is as a vacation destination while also ruining your average speed on Strava! I also wanted to provide a glimpse into the history of the area, so I mapped the countryside route to hit as many historic towns as possible (featuring the classic Spanish stone churches and plazas) and to provide some photo ops of ancient castles! The rides are not overly long on mileage, but they are challenging with plenty of short punchy climbs to go along with the featured mountain passes, and they will take longer than you think, especially since we will make a point to stop along the way to soak up the scenery. This is a bike tour after all, not a training camp. The point of this tour, and the reason we'll be on gravel bikes riding a variety of surfaces, is to thoroughly explore this region in all of its diversity and to maximize your time on the bike, both in terms of what you'll see and in terms of the fun you'll have riding your bike! I've also included unique lunch stops in the latter part of each ride that offer a chance to stop and appreciate the essence of each day's adventure, whether that's on the beach at a "xiringuito," in a historic plaza, or on a mountaintop with an epic view. And of course dinner options have also been carefully selected for both quality and setting. I limited the tour to four days to make it easy to combine this adventure with further exploration of the area and beyond. I'm happy to offer recommendations for Barcelona and other destinations, and I can also provide additional routes based out of Girona if you want to continue your cycling journey in this region after the tour. The possibilities are endless!

SUNDAY: Cycling Mecca

  • Girona

Welcome to Girona! While this beautiful city of 100,000 has long been the political and cultural center of the Costa Brava, it has more recently become a global cycling destination due to the fantastic road and gravel cycling it offers. Girona first came to the attention of the cycling world when Lance Armstrong and George Hincapie set up shop here in the early 2000's, and it is now home to hundreds of current and retired pros, with a growing reputation for its gravel scene. Beyond the cycling, Girona is loaded with historic sites (originally founded by the Romans in the first century BC), some of which you might recognize from the Game of Thrones. With no cycling scheduled for Sunday, you'll be free to explore this impressive city at your leisure. You'll also get a second shot at touring the town when we return to Girona Thursday afternoon to wrap up the tour!

MONDAY: City to Sea!

  • START: Girona

  • FINISH: Tossa de Mar

  • DISTANCE: 31 miles

  • CLIMBING: 2800 feet

  • SURFACE: Mostly Paved

We'll pick up our rental bikes after breakfast and head south towards the sea, taking advantage of Girona's extensive bike path network for miles of smooth sailing before launching onto the 3-mile Sant Grau climb over the Massis de Cadiretes, a beautiful forested conservation area. After cresting the climb, we'll be rewarded with a thrilling 4-mile descent towards the Mediterranean before intersecting with one of the most scenic roads in Spain! Perched on a cliffline overlooking the sea, this beautiful curvy road will take us the remaining six miles to our destination - Tossa de Mar, with its beautiful beaches and signature medieval walls. To give us a chance to catch our breath and really savor our arrival at the sea, we'll drop into a picturesque cove a few miles before we reach Tossa for a well-earned lunch on the beach!

TUESDAY: The Coast

  • START: Tossa de Mar

  • FINISH: Tamariu

  • DISTANCE: 34 miles

  • CLIMBING: 3700 feet

  • SURFACE: Mostly Paved

Tuesday morning we'll pick up where we left off by hopping back on the super scenic cliff-hugging road and taking it 12 miles north to the next beach town, St Feliu de Guixols. From there we'll downshift to tourist mode, as we roll from one coastal town to the next, soaking up the beauty of their beachside promenades and tackling the punchy climbs in between. After a dozen miles of working our way up the coast, we'll stop at a pristine undeveloped beach for lunch by the sea. The last third of the ride after lunch will take us through the three beach towns of Palafrugell, widely considered to be the crown jewels of the Costa Brava: Calella with its white-washed buildings and fishing village heritage, Llafranc with its picture-perfect marina, and finally to tiny Tamariu, an idyllic cove that will be our home for the next two nights.

WEDNESDAY: The Countryside

  • START: Tamariu

  • FINISH: Tamariu

  • DISTANCE: 46 miles

  • CLIMBING: 2800 feet

  • SURFACE: Mostly Gravel

After breakfast at the beach we'll head inland to ride through wide-open farmland that will feel like a journey back in time as we make our way from one historic town to the next, each with classic Spanish stone architecture, and all under the watchful gaze of a distant hilltop castle. It's a great ride and a nice change of pace from the coastal riding of the previous two days. Of course, to get to these peaceful farm roads, we will first have to climb our way up from the beach. It's a tough start with three miles of climbing, but once we reach the peak of the climb we will be greeted by a jaw-dropping view of the Mediterranean coast complete with an 11th century castle in the foreground! From there, we'll have four miles of descending followed by another 30 miles of easy rolling before stopping for lunch in the historic town of Pals. Another nine miles later, we'll be back in Tamariu for a relaxing afternoon in our quiet cove.

Els Angels.jpg

THURSDAY: The Mountains

  • START: Tamariu

  • FINISH: Girona

  • DISTANCE: 39 miles

  • CLIMBING: 4300 feet

  • SURFACE: Mostly Gravel

Having explored the coast and the countryside, we will finally turn our attention to the mountains as we work our way back to Girona. After a six-mile warm-up skirting around the city of Palafrugell, we'll launch onto the first climb of the day, a two and a half mile killer that will definitely wake up the legs! As hard as this climb may be, it's just the beginning of our adventure in the mountains. The real climbing starts around the halfway point of the ride as we head into the mountains of the El Balconet de les Gavarres nature preserve for a challenging seven-mile climb. Once we crest that beast, we'll ride the ridges for another three miles over to the top of Els Angels, arguably the most famous cycling climb in Girona. While the paved version of the climb may be more popular, our gravel conquest of this peak will be even tougher, making the view from the top that much sweeter! After bombing the first four miles of the descent into Girona, we'll stop at an amazing restaurant perched on a hillside overlooking town for a celebratory meal with a panoramic view. From there we'll hop off the pavement and ride the gravel backroads into town, return our rental bikes, and toast a week well-spent exploring this amazing corner of Spain!

Sunday & Thursday

Situated adjacent to Girona's old town, this cycling-friendly hotel offers modern comfort and amenities in a classic art deco building. While we appreciate the quality of the rooms and the convenience of the location, what we really love is the rooftop lounge with its killer view of Girona's historic landmarks! HOTEL WEBSITE

Mar Menuda 4_edited.jpg

Located right on Tossa de Mar's secondary beach (i.e. the less crowded one) but still within an easy walk to the city center and the historic walled district, the Golden Mar Menuda offers a warm welcome to the Mediterranean with private balconies overlooking the beach along with a beautiful dining terrace. HOTEL WEBSITE

Tuesday & Wednesday

We love this place so much that we opted for two nights! Free from high rises and tourist distractions, this quiet little cove is authentic Costa Brava. And with airy seafront rooms and a number of bars and restaurants to choose from, all overlooking the cove, Hotel Hostalillo is the ideal location to recover after a long day on the bike! HOTEL WEBSITE

What's Included:

The price of the tour is based almost entirely on the cost of the lodging (5 nights), with a little bit tacked on to cover the cost of luggage transport and to cover my time in putting the tour together and leading it.

  • 4 days of guided rides along with downloadable routes. Unlike previous Velo View tours, you will not be required to ride with the group. While we highly recommend that you do, both for the camaraderie and to make sure you make all the right turns, you'll have the freedom to do your own ride if you'd like.

  • 5 nights lodging at first-class hotels (+$300 for single occupancy). As with the original Velo View tours, I've included the lodging both before and after the tour to give you honest pricing when budgeting for your trip.

  • 5 breakfasts at our hotels.

  • Luggage transport. All rides are hotel to hotel with no vehicle transfers needed. You will simply leave your luggage at one hotel, and it will be waiting for you when you arrive at the next one.

  • Pictures! As always, I will be taking as many photos as possible!

What's Not Included:

This tour offers a lot more flexibility than the original Velo View tours and is not all-inclusive.

  • Lunch & dinners. While the itinerary includes carefully chosen lunch and dinner locations for us to enjoy together, the tab will be paid individually. As with the daily rides, we encourage you to stay with the group, but not including lunch & dinner in the tour fee provides flexibility on when, where and who you eat with.

  • Rental bikes. I can help with arranging the rental bikes, but the fee for the bikes will be paid individually (typically less than $100/day).

  • SAG support. Sadly the Velo View van will not be making the trip across the Atlantic. The good news is that all of the rides are point-to-point with no van transfers required. The bad news is that we won't have a SAG vehicle following us, so we will need to handle our own mechanicals, which is another reason to ride with the group.

Is Celeste going to be on the tour?

YES! (This is always the first question I get asked.)

How many people will be on the tour?

Like the original Velo View tours, the group will be limited to 8 guests plus me and Celeste. First 8 people to sign up are in! (We will also set up a waitlist in case there are cancellations.)

Are there other dates available besides May?

I only plan to offer one annual pre-scheduled tour (mid-May for the next few years). However, I'm open to running private tours for groups of 8 friends as long as the dates work out and as long as we have enough time to secure lodging. Email me if you'd like to talk about this option.

How hard are the rides?

As indicated by the elevation gain for each ride, the Costa Brava has a lot of climbing, some of which can be pretty steep. If you're concerned about being able to handle the challenge, please consider renting an e-bike. Your vacation will be that much more enjoyable!

What's the gravel like?

The unpaved roads we'll ride range from hard-pack dirt to loose sandy surfaces to regular gray gravel. While we will ride on a number of narrow bike trails, we won't have any singletrack or technical sections.

What's the weather like in mid-May?

May is the perfect time to visit the Costa Brava, as you get to enjoy warm temps without having to fight the summer tourist crowds. The Mediterranean will be chilly but warm enough for a quick dip, and more importantly the riding temps will be ideal, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. While you can never completely rule out rain, the chances are low, as May averages only 5 rain days for the whole month.

What about rental bikes?

We will provide you with all of the details for making arrangements for rental bikes, but you will be responsible for reserving which bike you will ride and handling payment for it.

Will e-bikes be an option?

Yes! And we highly recommend them given the amount of climbing on this tour. It's a vacation after all!

Where is the registration page?

Because this tour is invitation only, we do not have a visible registration page. Just email me when you're ready to sign up and I'll provide you with the link for registration.

How much is the deposit?

The deposit is $250 and will be charged when you register. The balance will be due 30 days from the start of the tour. I'll send an invoice for the balance roughly 6 weeks prior to the tour start.

What's the cancellation policy?

Deposits will be refunded in full for cancellation 6 months prior to the tour start. Cancellations between 6 months and 30 days will forfeit the full deposit. Cancellations within 30 days of the tour start will forfeit the full tour fee.

BACKGROUND: Why is Tennessee Gravel going to Spain???

In the early 2000s, I did a lot of traveling in Europe. I wasn't a cyclist then, but I really enjoyed hiking and swimming - and history. The Costa Brava has all of these things in spades, with the crystal clear Mediterranean, an incredible coastal trail system, medieval castles, and ruins that date back to the Romans and Greeks. So when I first visited the region in 2002, I was hooked! In fact, I loved it so much that I spent several weeks in 2003 hiking the entire length of the Costa Brava, from just north of Barcelona all the way to the French border. The plan was to write a guide book on how to reach the tourist-free hidden coves along the coast. (Even back then I was mapping routes!) Sadly that plan was shelved due to some seismic life changes. A few years later I met Celeste and dove headfirst into cycling, eventually quitting my job as a city planner and starting Velo View Bike Tours in 2012, which led to extensive exploration in the U.S. but left no time for Europe. Interestingly, while I was becoming obsessed with cycling, so was the Costa Brava. Over the 20+ years since I did my hike, the Costa Brava has grown into one of the most sought-after cycling destinations on the planet (for both road and gravel). This amazing confluence of my current passion for cycling with my past love of this coastline made a return to Spain seem like fate! So in 2025 Celeste and I traveled to the Costa Brava with an eye to run bike tours there on an annual basis. In 2026 we returned with a few friends and did a test run of the tour to fine-tune the routes and smooth out the logistics. And now I'm finally ready to run a proper bike tour in one of my favorite places in the world - a tour 25 years in the making!
